How to Create a Miniature Pen & Watercolour Picture
Here are some simple steps and tips which could help you get started on your pen and watercolour creation.

Pen & Watercolour sets available here.
1
Collect all your equipment
You will need:
- Watercolour paint set with space for mixing your paint
- Fine permanent pen e.g. size 0.1 or 0.05
- Paint brushes e.g. sizes 00 and 5
- Watercolour paper
- Small frame (with or without mount)
- Pencil
- Rubber (if using a mount)
- Scissors or paper cutter
- Small pot with a little water

2
Decide what you want to draw
Find a photo of what you want to draw or put your objects which you want to draw in front of you.

Top Tip:
It is easier to draw if the photo is the same size as your frame so you might want to zoom in or use a larger screen.

3
Cut your paper to size
Using a pencil, mark the paper to the same size as the backing board of your frame.
Cut the paper.
Top Tip:
If you are using a mount, draw little corners onto your paper where you want your edges of your picture to be. You will rub these out afterwards.

4
Draw your picture
Using your fine pen, draw your picture.

Top Tips:
Draw the main outlines first. Move your eyes backwards and forwards between the photo or objects and your own drawing.
Don't include everything in your drawing; tiny details will need to be left out.

5
Select or mix your paint
Wet your paintbrush and put paint on it by moving the brush one way across the paint.
Mix colours in the palette when needed.

Top Tip:
Wash your brush each time you change the colour.

6
Paint your picture
Use your thin paintbrush to colour in the detailed parts of your drawing and let them dry.
Use the thicker paintbrush to paint the sky, grass or larger parts of your drawing.

Top Tips:
Keep strokes going in the same direction and do not push hard on your paper.
Do not add a lot of water to your brush for the detailed parts.
Add more water to the palette for the larger parts.

7
Frame your painting
Use the fine pen to sign your painting in a bottom corner.
Put your painting in the frame with the mount in front if you have one.
Display your creation on a shelf or hang on the wall - or even better, wrap it up for someone you care about as an original, present they will love forever.
