“Sláinte Mhath!” (pronounced 'slanj'-uh va' meaning Good Health!)
With my Scottish husband and good friends, we'll be celebrating on 25th January this year. Burns Night is a time to enjoy Scottish traditions and celebrate the renowned poet Robert Burns with a classic combination of haggis, neeps, tatties, some reciting of poetry, and maybe even a warming dram. It's also an opportunity to celebrate Scotland's enduring legacy of creativity.
So what better time than to celebrate my Scottish creations! Following a visit to the Highlands, I painted a Highland Coo for my husband's birthday - he was happy with a print made into a card so the original acrylic is now for sale in Strawberry Cottage Studio. I was also inspired by the rolling hills and another painting was born - Floral Highlands. Coming from the furthest south of England, I was told, "They are definitely hills, not mountains"!
A couple of years previously, we took a trip to Anstruther and then caught the boat across to the magical Isle of May. What an amazing sight with puffins galore! We spent our time trying not to argue over who had the use of our SLR camera as we were both desperate to catch the beauty of their striking bills. We were told that more than a quarter of a million birds were present that day - flabbergasting! Those beautiful birds have stayed in my mind ever since and can be seen in the form of pen and watercolour in my studio - Puffin at May Island.
Can't wait to return - Happy Burns Night to you all!
